Winemakers Comments
An absolutely charming wine, offering a rarely encountered full complement of the famous 5 Bordeaux varieties, showcasing exquisite balance and sophisticated elegance. Aromas of bell pepper, chocolate and sweet red berry nuances mingle on the nose. Vibrant plum and vanilla undertones rounded by cedar hints, all come together on the palate of this genteel blend. The velvety finish is brimming with dark fruit and peppermint chocolate framed by soft tannins.

Cellar Techniques
Grapes were de-stemmed after extensive sorting and not crushed to ensure gentle extraction. Whole berry fermentation, punch downs and 30 day extended skin contact were undertaken. Only wine recovered from a light pressing was matured in 50% new and 50% seasoned French oak barrels for 18 months, during which malolactic fermentation took place.

Winery
Glen Carlou is situated in the Simonsberg—Paarl region of South Africa’s Western Cape. Of the current 31 blocks planted and which encompass a variety of slopes and aspects, each is nurtured according to its own unique potential, respecting the natural cycles of the vines. A vineyard replanting programme is underway adding 5 hectares per year. Hardier, tougher drought resistant rootstocks and new varietal clonal selections are being planted. Our 145 hectare property transferred back to local ownership when in 2016, Glen Carlou was purchased by a South African family consortium. The rich tapestries of passionate people interwoven with insightful custodians have shaped and continue to develop Glen Carlou Vineyards.
