Wine Composition
Bordeaux Style Blend
Winemakers Comments
Dense ripe blueberry and black cherry aromas with violets and savory highlights of finely crushed dried herbs. Bold and powerful on the palate with layers of black fruits, ground nutmeg and cedar. Classical, fine and slightly austere, youthful Cabernet tannins give definition, depth and distinction to this great Cabernet blend. A surge of flavors on the finish ensures the memory of the wine remains lingering on the palate. In its youth now thru 2035.

Cellar Techniques
The Gimblett Gravels fruit was handpicked and gently handled to ensure skins were not torn or seeds crushed as they destemmed and moved the grapes to the small fermenting vats. They allowed the natural yeast on the grape skins to carry out the ferment and hand plunged as required to ensure the ripe fruit flavors and texture were balanced by fine structural tannins.

The Gimblett Road area of Hawke’s Bay is synonymous with the production of world-renowned wines. From these much celebrated shingle soils, hails the region’s most exciting boutique label: Squawking Magpie. The “cradle of quality” for Squawking Magpie is the Woodlands Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels area, the first 4 hectares of which were planted in 1995. In 2002, a new 20 hectare vineyard was developed as a joint venture and planted predominantly in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
From the very first plantings, emphasis has been placed on creating outstanding wines by focusing on viticultural excellence. Owner and director Gavin Yortt and his team hold the firm belief that great wine comes from great grapes. And the proof is certainly there to be tasted: Squawking Magpie wines exhibit all the elegance and finesse of a unique terroir and stand testament to the superiority of single vineyard estate management and production.
