Tuscany is located in the central part of Italy and along the Tyrrhenian coast and is home to many of Italy’s most prominent wine regions. Chianti, Montalcino and Montelpuciano produce the most famous wines of the area, and are mostly made from Sangiovese grapes. The most notable white wine of this area is made from the Vernaccia grape. Tuscany is also known for the famous dessert wine Vin Santo which is made from a number of different varietals. Super Tuscans are part of an unofficial category that was establishes in the 70’s. They are made outside the DOC regulations but are of extremely high quality (and high prices). Today many of these Super Tuscans are cult wines and are coveted all around the world.
