Once the most planted grape in California, Zinfandel has a reputation of being a chameleon grape as it is made into off-dry to sweet white and pink wines, yet dry, soft to bold red wines. Being a red grape, connoisseurs find the reds more distinct and desirable. Its lineage often confusing, researchers set about distinguishing its origins and results showed that Crljenak Kastelanski, Primitivo and Zinfandel grapes were a perfect DNA match, thus confirming its Croatian origins. Red berry fruit flavors like raspberry dominate in wines from cooler areas, whereas jammy, blackberry goodness with anise and pepper notes are more prevalent in wines produced in warmer climates.
